Keeping your pipes in good condition not only helps you avoid costly repairs but also protects your home from water damage and health hazards. However, with just a few simple habits and some routine maintenance, you can extend the life of your plumbing system and prevent most common issues.
1. Don’t pour grease or food scraps down the sink. It might seem harmless at first, but grease solidifies as it cools and sticks to the inner walls of your pipes, eventually causing blockages. Instead, pour used oil and grease into a separate container and throw it in the trash. Installing a strainer over your drain is another great way to catch food particles before they go down the pipes.
2. Clean your drains regularly with natural solutions. A simple mix of baking soda and vinegar once a month can disinfect, deodorize, and help dissolve small buildups in your drains. Avoid overusing chemical drain cleaners—they may offer quick results, but they can corrode your pipes over time and lead to bigger issues.
3. Keep an eye on water pressure. High water pressure can put stress on your pipes and joints, eventually leading to leaks or bursts. Install a pressure regulator to keep levels between 40 and 60 psi, which is generally considered safe. If you notice inconsistent pressure, it’s a good idea to call a plumber for an inspection.
4. Protect exposed pipes from extreme temperatures. In colder climates, pipes located in basements, crawl spaces, or outside walls can freeze and burst. Use pipe insulation to protect them, and during particularly cold nights, let a small trickle of water run to keep the water moving. Maintaining a minimum indoor temperature in unused areas can also help.
5. Schedule a professional inspection once a year. A licensed plumber can identify small leaks, signs of corrosion, or early damage you might not notice on your own. Early detection prevents major repairs and gives you peace of mind. Annual inspections are especially important if you live in an older home with aging plumbing.
